The Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus are a Catholic fraternity that started on October 2, 1981 in New Haven Connecticut. A small group of Catholic men were called together by their parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to form this society to defend their country, their families and their faith through the unity and solidarity of their numbers.

On May 9, 1990 Sacred Heart Parish was granted a charter for a new Council. The ‘Sacred Heart-King City Council’ was started through the efforts of parishioner Mr. Alexander (Sandy) Harkes who solicited 30 men of the parish to come together for this new initiative. Sandy Harkes was also elected as the Council’s first Grand Knight. The council quickly became an integral part of the parish by sponsoring and participating in local Right to Life efforts and the dedication of monument to the unborn in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Community efforts also included the sponsorship of altar servers, pancake breakfasts, free throw basketball competitions for local youth. Funds raised by the Knights were used for local and national charities as well as parish efforts.

Due to an unfortunate lack of support by its members, the council was suspended in October of 1999. However, in the Spring of 2000, a strong effort was made by remaining members to reinstate the Council and restore it to a vital part of Sacred Heart Parish.

Meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (September – June) in the Parish Centre at 8:00 pm in the Meeting Room upstairs.
